About Baphomet

About Baphomet Cover "The goat on the frontispiece carries the sign of the Pentagram on the forehead, with one point at the top, a symbol of light, his two hands forming the sign of hermetism, the one pointing up to the white moon of Chesed, the other pointing down to the black one of Geburah. This sign expresses the perfect harmony of mercy with justice. His one arm is female, the other male like the ones of the androgyn of Khunrath, the attributes of which we had to unite with those of our goat because he is one and the same symbol. The flame of intelligence shining between his horns is the magic light of the Universal balance, the image of the soul elevated above matter, as the flame, whilst being tied to matter, shines above it. The ugly beast's head expresses the horror of the sinner, whose materially acting, solely reponsible part has to bear the punishment exclusively; because the soul is insensitive According to its nature and can only suffer when it materializes. The rod standing instead of genitals symbolizes eternal life, the body covered with scales the water, the semi- circle above it the atmosphere, the feathers following above the volatile. Humanity is represented by the two breasts and the androgyn arms of this sphinx of the occult sciences."

An Essay In Ontology With Some Remarks On Ceremonial Magic

An Essay In Ontology With Some Remarks On Ceremonial Magic Cover

Book: An Essay In Ontology With Some Remarks On Ceremonial Magic by Aleister Crowley

In presenting this theory of the Universe to the world, I have but one hope of making any profound impression, viz.-that my theory has the merit of explaining the divergences between the three great forms of religion now existing in the world-Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity, and of adapting them to ontological science by conclusions not mystical but mathematical.

Of Mohammedism I shall not now treat, as, in whatever light we may decide to regard it (and its esoteric schools are often orthodox), in any case it must fall under one of the three heads of Nihilism, Advaitism, and Dvaitism. Taking the ordinary hypothesis of the universe, that of its infinity, or at any rate that of the infinity of God, or of the infinity of some Substance or idea actually existing, we first come to the question of the possibility of the co-existence of God and man.

Thelemic Practice Love As Ye Will

Thelemic Practice Love As Ye Will Cover
There are those who take Liber L vel Legis, The Book of the Law, as the Holy Canon to which to adhere in this New Era of Light, Life, Love & Liberty, and there are others who take what they will therefrom, choosing the parts they like over parts that they favor not. It is not for any one to judge any other as to the way of his or her Will; but in my experience, most of the problems that arise do so not out of an inability of the Law of Thelema to harmonize with the Will of one who dislikes this or that portion of the Holy Law, but rather, from an inability of one to fully comprehend — much less to successfully apply — this or that portion of the Law in question to his or her life. In this article, we take a look at one of the thornier of these misunderstood roses of Thelemic practice: the proper attitude of the Thelemite in all matters of love and lust.

What we in the West — particularly those of us in the U.S. (or in other such Puritanical places) — must first realize, is that we are weighed down from the get-go with the cumbersome, outworn and unnatural sexual ideals of Christian chastity. It underscores nearly all relationship tendencies that most of us are initially burdened with; and its cancerous source is, of course, rooted in the notion that the beloved is something that one earns and therefore possesses, e.g. as a knight in olden times won his virginal maiden.

This archaic, misguided view corrupts our attitudes towards sex and relationships nearly as much today as it did way back then, even in totally liberal, non-Christian families, instilling these seeds of monogamistic tendencies in the fertile soil of our childhood minds, influencing us with predilections that, outmoded as they are, do not fit at all well into — much less contribute to the betterment of — contemporary relationships. Naturally, as we are predisposed to favor and feverishly defend such notions as are so deeply rooted in the bedrock of our subconscious minds, rather than recognize and re-synthesize these unnatural tendencies into completely new, healthier ones, we tend to prefer to avoid the change such would require of us and cling instead to harmful traditions. Hence the very high rate of separation in modern society.

Those who choose to do so are, of course, inclined to defend their position by claiming that it is — as it is with certain other animals — simply their Will to be monogamous. Again, far be it for me or anyone else to dispute this claim; but it is highly suspect. On the other hand, as one who himself also once felt this way, unaware (and unwilling to be aware) of the underlying germ of monogamistic ill will that poisoned his relationships with all varieties of dysfunctional proclivities, I can safely say that it is possible if not altogether likely that such attitudes are mired in ignorance and delusion as this tendency to monogamy rears its ugly head in the affairs of others.

We primates are, in reality, much happier when freed of the grip of monogamistic tendencies and allowed to appreciate polyamorous affairs. Not to say that remaining devoted to a given individual (or individuals) for an extended period of time is necessarily a hindrance to one’s True Will: it can be so — or not — depending of course on a number of factors, the main ones being compatibility and maturity across all involved parties. But there is a vital caveat: all such parties must be perfectly free of the slightest germ of jealousy; and this can only be satisfactorily achieved (a) with time and experience, and (b) with the acquisition of certainty in the solidity of the relationship, unwaveringly confident that no such affair can ever compromise the integrity of the foundational relationship(s).

True, many relationships may well be destroyed by the initial experimentation, but again that is to be expected when two or more parties are so chock full of unresolved fears and uncertainties. Besides, most individuals are incompatible in the first place, and are merely deluded into thinking otherwise on the basis of convenient familiarity. Also, laziness plays a factor at times, i.e. it is far easier to convince oneself that one is compatible with someone with whom one already shares so much history than it is to search out someone new and start all over from scratch. If one is to be truly happy in one’s love life, then one has to lift away the blinders and be fully willing to see all facets of one’s relationship as they are in fact, brutally honest with oneself and with one’s partner(s) in all respects.

First, however, in order for this to work, one must confine oneself to affairs with individuals who are already unhampered with the baggage of Old Age ideologies. While this may seem ideologically xenophobic, it is in reality the only way to avoid hurtful and damaging problems that will inevitably corrode the closest and happiest of relationships into monstrosities of discord and sorrow. For ideologies that are cemented solidly in the errors of primitive thinking cannot gel with those that are liberated therefrom.

The central obstacle to clear in this polygamous approach to love with a main partner (or two or three, as the case may be), though, is the tendency to be jealous, as aforesaid. Fear, as always, is the underlying culprit: fear of being outdone by another lover, and fear that such will lead to one’s beloved leaving one for that other. To address the former: one simply has to be realistic, i.e., one can never be all things in love and in lust to any one person, no matter how perfect one thinks one is. And if one truly loves someone, then one should find complete satisfaction and — if one is completely liberated not only from every element of fear but of possessiveness — even perfect arousal in the satisfaction and arousal of that partner in the concordant embrace of another.

Finally, there is from the Thelemic perspective no such thing as heterosexual primacy. Gay and lesbian relationships, as also bisexual ones, stand equally beside heterosexual liaisons: there is not one more natural than, or superior to, another. This is an advantage of Thelemic religion, that it regards all forms of love and lust as equally sacred, and looks down on no expression thereof unless it forces another against his or her (or its) consent. Animals and children, of course, cannot consent, being as they are of a mind unable to fairly judge, so naturally they are off-limits.

Finally, it is always worth bearing in mind verse 41 of chapter 1 of The Book of the Law, which reads:

“The word of Sin is Restriction. O man! refuse not thy wife, if she will! O lover, if thou wilt, depart! There is no bond that can unite the divided but love: all else is a curse.”

Love should always be a blessing and never a curse.

In closing, let’s remember the words of St.John on his deathbed: “Little children, love one another”.

With his blessing, then, let the orgies begin!

Death On Mount Kanchenjunga

Death On Mount Kanchenjunga Cover In 1905 Crowley led the first expedition to attempt to climb the third highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga (28,208 feet), located in the Himalayas. Having taken up mountaineering in 1898, Crowley had frequently excelled at this sport in the Alps and elsewhere thanks to his considerable skills, physical stamina, and courage. However, the ill-fated Kanchenjunga expedition suffered from multiple problems which ultimately proved fatal. Prior to the ascent, Crowley failed to ensure the recruitment of well qualified, compatible expedition members. During the ascent he managed them poorly; some of the porters even deserted. Morale of the men was poor and great tension and animosity existed between Crowley and many of the them. Impassioned arguments even broke out over his choice of route.

At camp five (21,000 feet, according to Crowley) things came to a head: six of the men (including three porters) mutinied and began to descend, while the magus remained with the rest of the expedition. During their descent four men fell and triggered an avalanche which buried them. The remaining two, still within earshot of Crowley, cried for help as they set to extricating their comrades. However, he did nothing, waiting until the next day to descend. Two days later the bodies of the dead men were recovered. Crowley and other expedition members reported the events to the press. Many members of the public and mountaineering clubs found Crowley’s behavior reprehensible. Thus, the Kanchenjunga expedition ended in tragedy, failure, and permanent damage to Crowley’s reputation as a mountaineer.

Book: The Zodiac And The Tarot by Aleister Crowley

THE UNIVERSE is one, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. Its substance is homogenous and this substance cannot be said to possess the qualities of Being, Consciousness, and Bliss; for these are rather the shadows of it, which are apprehended by the highly illuminated mind when it comes near thereto. Time and space themselves are but illusions which condition under veils.

Magicians

Magicians Cover I went back to Treadwells again and again, thinking I had found a second home. I later found out I had cut quite a dash without realizing it. This was not a necessarily a good thing…

I met all sorts of people there, from Celtic Pagans to Black Magicians. In my years reading Tarot in Camden Lock Market, I had met many Goths and became friends with an amazing couple, Pippi and Kallustratus, who had links with Gothic Satanists. Kallistratus claimed to come from a line of Cuthulu devotees, a magical path based on the. literary works of H.P.Lovecraft. These paths and lifestyles were not my cup of tea. I didn’t understand how the Necrinomicon could be the basis of a religion. As Pippi said about me, “She doesn’t have any evil in her.” It is pretty true despite appearances. It’s just that, as an artist, I have a tendency to go where angels fear to tread….

Out of curiosity, open mindedness, and a quest for material, I allowed myself to get to know various Dark Magicians. They turned out to be extremely intelligent, creative, and quite fun to be around, though I kept a firm limit on how far I would get involved. I am very sensitive, and have to work overtime to keep my psychic boundaries intact, never mind the social ones. After my Underworld Initiation when the Holy Grail erupted form the earth in 1996, I was well aware of the extremely powerful effect magic has on me, and am very careful not to get involved with other peoples’ workings.

It was among these Magicians that I met Pharaon, author of the wonderfully poetic Grimoire, Liber Niger Legionis. This magically inspired book is filled with invocations to Infernal Deities, or Demons. I told P. and K. about it and they wanted a copy. It was a limited edition, beautifully bound by hand. A work of Art. Each one of the 72 Grimoires is dedicated to a certain Demon.

When I went into Treadwells to make the purchase, its author was unexpectedly there to greet me. There were only 3 Grimoires left. The one I chose was dedicated to Ophiel, an Angel of the Air sigilized as a kind of vortex of dark wind. Pharaon happily signed the Grimiore for me, increasing its value for my friends. We had a nice chat and a laugh. I was relieved to find him genuinely friendly and easy to talk to. I took the Grimoire home planning to give it to K. and P. at the Market on the next Monday.

Learning The Tree Of Life

Learning The Tree Of Life Cover The Tree of Life is a tool used to categorize and organize various mystical concepts. At its most simple level it is composed of ten spheres, or emanations, called sephiroth (sing. "sephira") which are connected by twenty-two paths. The sephiroth are represented by the planets and the paths by the characters of the Hebrew alphabet, which are subdivided by the five elements, the seven classical planets, and the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

Within the western magical tradition, the Tree is used as a kind of conceptual filing cabinet. Each sephira and path is assigned various ideas, such as gods, cards of the Tarot, astrological planets and signs, elements, etc. Within Thelema, the seminal book which defines all these correspondences is Crowley's Liber 777, although there have been other influential writers on the topic, including Israel Regardie and Eliphas Levi.

The path of attainment is largely defined by the Tree of Life. The aspirant begins in Malkuth, which is the everyday material world of phenomena, with the ultimate goal being at Kether, the sphere of Unity with the All. Through various exercises and practices, he or she attains certain spiritual and mental states that are characterized by the various sephiroth that ascend the Tree. Crowley considered a deep understanding of the Qabalah to be essential to the Thelemite:

The Tree of Life has got to be learnt by heart; you must know it backwards, forwards, sideways, and upside down; it must become the automatic background of all your thinking. You must keep on hanging everything that comes your way upon its proper bough.

and,

The art of using it consists principally in referring all our ideas to it, discovering thus the common nature of certain things and the essential differences between others, so that ultimately one obtains a simple view of the incalculably vast complexity of the Universe.

The whole subject must be studied in the Book 777, and the main attributions committed to memory: then when by constant use the system is at last understood — as opposed to being merely memorised — the student will find fresh light break in on him at every turn as he continues to measure every item of new knowledge that he attains by this Standard. For to him the Universe will then begin to appear as a coherent and a necessary Whole.

Part of the reason why the Qabalah is so important is that it is the key to understanding the Holy Books. Most of them, including The Book of the Law, are written in abstract, poetic, and often obscure language. Through the use of the Qabalah, and especially the function of gematria (a form of numerology), the normally opaque meaning of the texts can be made clear. Thelemites can also make use of gematria to link words and concepts and to validate revelations given to them in magical operations, such as astral travel.

The Book Of Lies Cover

Book: The Book Of Lies by Aleister Crowley

Another of Aleister Crowley's important works was a book on mysticism, The Book of Lies (1912), whilst another was a collection of different essays entitled Little Essays Toward truth (1938). He also penned an autobiography, entitled The Confessions of aleister crowley (1929). Throughout his lifetime he wrote many letters and meticulously kept diaries, some of which were posthumously published as magick Without Tears. During his lifetime he also edited and produced a series of publications in book form called The Equinox (subtitled "The Review of Scientific Illuminism"), which served as the voice of his magical order, the A?A?. Although the entire set is influential and remains one of the definitive works on occultism, some of the more notable issues are "The Blue Equinox", "The Equinox of the Gods", "Eight Lectures on Yoga", "The Book of Thoth" and "Liber Aleph". Thelemic Feasts

Thelemic Feasts Cover Thelema does not typically have holidays as most religions. Some Thelemic groups may honor the quarter days of the year as well as any other days they see fit. However, within the book of the law there are several feasts listed and they are found in (II:37-44).

II:37. A feast for the first night of the Prophet and his Bride!

• (August 12) On this day in 1903 e.v., aleister crowley was married to his first wife, Rose Kelly. Rose was to play an important part in the inauguration of the New Aeon and the reception of The Book of the Law.

II:38. A feast for the three days of the writing of the Book of the Law.

• (April 8, 9, 10) Over these three days in April 1904 e.v., aleister crowley received the three chapters of The Book of the Law. These holidays are typically celebrated with readings of each chapter on its respective day.

II:39. A feast for Tahuti and the child of the Prophet--secret, O Prophet!

II:40. A feast for the Supreme Ritual, and a feast for the Equinox of the Gods.

• (March 20) The anniversary of the beginning of the Aeon of Horus in 1904 e.v.. This date also marks the beginning of the Thelemic New Year.

II:41. A feast for fire and a feast for water; a feast for life and a greater feast for death!

• The Equinoxes and the Solstices. The seasonal turning points of the year, traditionally celebrated by many cultures throughout history, are also ritually observed by Thelemites and other practitioners of Magick.

II:42. A feast every day in your hearts in the joy of my rapture!

II:43. A feast every night unto Nu, and the pleasure of uttermost delight!

• The above two passages regarding these feasts are self explanatory

*Other days of honor and celebration

"Crowleymas" (October 12)
The anniversary of Aleister Crowley's birth in 1875 e.v..

Crowley's "Greater Feast" (December 1)

Alice, an Adultery however is a sign of Crowley's maturing poetical skills (as well as again his love of adultery) and claims in the Introduction to have been passed him in MS. form from the dying lover of "Alice" on his journeys in the East. The Dark Side Of The Tree Or Tree Of Death

The Dark Side Of The Tree Or Tree Of Death Cover Now, more appropriately for Parsons and Thelema, I shall do my best to explain the Dark Side of the Tree of Life. Think of it as the same as the Dark Side of the Moon, where a crater has been named for Jack Parsons, where everything is reversed like a reflection in a mirror.

The mirror can be front to back as with a coin, but also up and down as when a tree is reflected in a lake. (See the image at the top of this post.) This essay is about the front/back dichotomy. The up/down has to do with the Underworld of Faery.

Most things that live in the dark, or on the dark side, have developed fearful shapes in the minds of the members of the Big Three religions that have been indoctrinated to to seek, exclusively, the Light. In Christianity, I think the idea that God is Logos, equated to the Sun, may have something to do with this. Therefore, the moon, or the dark being opposed, must be anti-God.

Exploring the reverse side of the Tree of Life was forbidden, for it was said to be the abode of demons, shells, and destructive, chaotic forces — the flip side of the acceptable qualities of the bright side of the tree. An example of this would be:

Chesed, ruled by Jupiter and all the Gods of beneficence, mercy, abundance, and expansion can flip over into excess, greed, compulsion, and cancerous growth. Think of the good and bad sides of Sagittarius: jovial, fun- loving, active, philosophical, but wow, can they be dogmatic, bullying, crude, and its my way or the highway!

Its like that for all of the Sephiroth, whether Netzach (Venus), Hod (Mercury) Geburah (Mars) Binah (Saturn), etc.. (See the charts) The Dark Tree houses chaos, disintegration, unbalanced power, or forces out of conscious control — for what is in the dark is unconscious, instinctual, reacting without thought. Furies live on the dark side of tree, and all those beings that we, or society as a whole, reject. Death lives on the dark side, waiting in the shadows.
