Sria And The Golden Dawn

Sria And The Golden Dawn Image
Regular readers of the Golden Dawn blog will recall recent articles here and here and here protesting interference in the Golden Dawn community by Masonic Rosicrucian Societies. For example, the article citing the ridiculous remarks made by SRICF Supreme Magus, William Koon, implying that the SRICF has authority to designate an "official" Golden Dawn order.

It turns out that it is not only the regular Freemasonic Rosicrucian Societies that would like to get their paws on the Golden Dawn. Even the clandestine, irregular ones have been eying up the Golden Dawn like a hungry dog sizes up a juicy bone for some time now.

Logo of the Irregular "SRIA"

The Societas Rosicruciana in America (improperly called S.R.I.A. to cause confusion with the real, British S.R.I.A.) is an irregular Freemasonic-style Occult society founded by George Plummer. The S.R.I.A. today improperly operates in America, directly infringing on the territory of the regular Freemasonic Rosicrucian Society in America, the S.R.I.C.F.

George Plummer, Cladestine "SRIA" Founder

Plummer submitted an application to gain recognition and regularity for the Soc. Ros. in America from the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, and corresponded briefly in this regard with W. Wynn Wescott. The application was immediately rejected by the High Council of the Soc. Ros. In Anglia. The American's organization's persistence in calling itself "S.R.I.A." (sic) is therefore obviously indicative of an intent to mislead the public.

Due to Plummer's brief correspondence with Wescott, false but persistent rumors have been circulated for years that the Soc. Ros. In America received either a Golden Dawn charter or a regular ritual transmission from Wescott. That this deception has been intentional is evidenced on the orders website where they write: "it was during this time that the Societas Rosicruciana in America received the status from Dr. Wm. W. Westcott to work with the Golden Dawn system."In reality, there exists no evidence at all that the Soc. Ros. In America ever received either a charter or even a regular ritual transmission from either the Golden Dawn or any if its derivative orders.

The Soc. Ros. In America did eventually begin to work and odd version of Golden Dawn ritual, which was derived not from Wescott, but rather cobbled together from Aleister Crowley's published account of Golden Dawn rituals in "The Equinox." In a desperate move to achieve at least a veneer of legitimacy, the Soc. Ros. In America next appointed Aleister Crowley to its board of directors, before finally managing to get a Rosicrucian charter from the Quakertown Rosicrucians, descending from Pascal Beverly Randolph.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the group was presided over by "Sister Lucia" Grosch. Whatever tenuous lineal affiliation Soc. Ros. In America might ever have ever enjoyed, with certainty ended when Grosch dissolved its high council in the 1980s. Grosch was later sued by Frank Modica in the 1990's in a real property suit that nearly bankrupted Grosch. Substantally destitute, Grosch accepted financial assistance from Maria Babwahsingh apparently in exchange for handing over leadership of the Soc. Ros. In America to Babwahsingh.

Under present leadership, the Soc. Ros. in America today makes a host of false and misleading lineage claims on its sria.org website including claims of charters from the Golden Dawn, the R.R. et A.C., and the Alpha et Omega. These claims have been debunked with specificity by Golden Dawn historian, Anthony Fleming (aka Tony Fuller), who wrote: "If I am correct in thinking that you dispute any direct and official ritual transmission from the Golden Dawn, Stella Matutina or Alpha et Omega to the Soc. Ros. in America, then I agree with you. Their rituals are sui generis and while, as noted by R.A. Gilbert there is Golden Dawn material included in some of them, I am not aware of any evidence that this occurred through any authorized Charter, Warrant, etc. from the Golden Dawn, Stella Matutina, or Alpha et Omega."Indeed, closer examination of the host of alleged charters published on the Soc. Ros. In America website reveals them, in actually, to be nothing but a collection of completely unrelated documents and certainly not charters.

The Thoth Tarot Deck

The Thoth Tarot Deck Image
The Thoth Tarot Deck was a tarot deck developed by the English occultist Aleister Crowley and illustrated on his instructions by Lady Frieda Harris. Aleister Crowley called the Thoth tarot deck, the book of Thoth and claimed that the deck reflected the wisdom of the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth. The tarot card descriptions found on the Thoth Tarot deck are different in symbolism and imagery compared to other standard tarot card decks.

Thoth is considered one of the most important deities of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. He is known as the God with the head of an ibis. He is the heart and tongue of the all-powerful Egyptian Sun God Ra. He translated the will of Ra into speech and is the divine communicator of Egyptian mythology. He was the scribe of the Gods and was called the God of Writing. The book of Thoth is used for divination through tarot cards. The tarot card descriptions on the Thoth deck are reflections of the great knowledge of the ancient Egyptians.

A cult of Thoth grew during the last years of the Egyptian civilization who claimed to predict the future through occult divination. Aleister Crowley claims that the Thoth tarot deck developed by him was based on the tarot card descriptions followed by the cult of Thoth. He developed the deck between 1938 and 1943. He commissioned Lady Frieda Harris to illustrate the deck based on his visions and based on the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth papyrus by Jasnow and Zauzich. It took five years to develop the deck because Crowley wanted the images to reflect different disciplines including science and philosophy.

The tarot card descriptions in the Crowley Thoth tarot deck are different from the Rider Waite and other standard tarot card decks. The Major Arcana or trump cards are 21 in number and consist of the fool, the Magician or Magus, the high Priestess, the Emperor, the Empress, the Hierophant, the lovers, the chariot, Adjustment, the hermit, the wheel of fortune, lust, the hanged man, death, art, devil, tower, star, moon, sun, aeon and the universe. Court cards in the Thoth minor Arcana deck are the prince, the princess, queen and the knight. While the suite of cups, disks, swords and wands remain the same, they are illustrated with an Egyptian hieroglyphic style. The pips of the minor Arcana in the Thoth deck relate to the signs of the zodiac with the aces depicting the root of the element they represent. Each pip card in each suite has an attribute.

The wand suite relates to the fire signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the fire element 2 dominions, 3 virtues, 4 completion, 5 strife, 6 victory, 7valor, 8 swiftness, 9 strength and 10 oppression.

The cup suite represents the water signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the water element, 2 love,3 abundance, 4 luxury, 5 disappointment, 6 pleasure, 7 debauchery, 8 indolence, 9 happiness and 10 safety.

The sword suite represents the air signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the air element 2 peace, 3 sorrow, 4 truces, 5 defeats, 6 science, 7 futility, 8 interference, 9 cruelty and 10 ruin.

The disks suite represents the earth signs of the zodiac. The ace is the root of the earth element, 2 change, 3 work, 4 power, 5 worry, 6 success, 7 failure, 8 prudence, 9 gain and 10 wealth.

The Thoth tarot deck reflects the tarot card descriptions that formed the visions of Aleister Crowley on a visit to Egypt. Many diviners have found great merit in predicting the future using the Thoth Tarot deck.

ASCII MUSICAL NOTATION
developed by Leigh Ann Hussey
with help from Shadowthought and Josh Gordon

Each line of the music consists of 4 lines of music. The time signature(s),
the lines between bars, and each note take up one column, with modifiers such as sharps, flats, and dots extending a note up to three columns. The time signature is written at the beginning in the obvious way. Three vertical bars (lines 2 to 4) mark the divisions between measures. Lines 1 to 3 indicate note durations, as follows:

1/16 1/8 1/4 1/2 dotted-1/2 1/8 1/4
note note note note note rest rest

o o.

Line 4 indicates the pitch. The numbers 1 to 8 mark the octave including middle C (A through F); 1
' to 8', one octave above middle C; 1" to 8", two octaves above middle C; '1 to '8, the octave below middle C. A number followed by a # is a sharp; a number followed by a lower-case b is a flat. Underscores connecting a note to the next note indicate a slur. Consider the following examples:

Thelema Magick Wiccand Energy

Thelema Magick Wiccand Energy Image
Energy... Just the sound of the word and many amazing images come to mind! The entire universe is a continuously moving, changing existence of energies, not a gathering of things that are stationery and still, which have been carefully placed.

All things affect other things in one way or another. All in life is intertwined in some way. It's like saying "Every action has a reaction" and it's true. When we allow energy to flow naturally it's a beautiful thing, coming and going, taking us everywhere while tickling all of our senses.

The sights are mesmerizing, the sounds create feelings of wonder, the goose bumps received are Magickal, and the scents of all the universe join into our hunger for more! As Witches, we reach out to touch, not only those closest to us, but we invite the entire universe to touch us as well, showing us ways to energize with a passion that is infinite in itself.

Being a Witch, and enjoying the ability to summons this energy can create change that can be both wondrous and fearful. Proper use of Wicca and energy is not understated as is the balance of the constant increases and decreases in that energy, flow as a river of powerful Magick.

Such a precious commodity this energy, that too much can be draining to our psyche. This is why it is so important to "ground" your energy before and after performing spell work. Remember the power of energy flows through us. It does not come out of us. We connect with various energies on various planes and levels which are all interconnected to each other.

You can avoid being depleted by excess energy in many ways. You can go outside and make contact with the elements, nature etc., which can sufficiently restore vitality. For good grounding you can dance and chant, creating a rhythm that shakes the excess loose. You can also place both hands flat on the bare ground pressing all excess energy into the ground, while visualizing it leaving your body.

Love the energy. It keeps us healthy and stimulates the Wicca in us!

Crowley Influence On Rock N Roll

Crowley Influence On Rock N Roll Cover Crowley has had a great influence on rock & roll. The International Times voted Crowley “the unsung hero of the hippies.” One man who helped popularized Crowley’s work among rockers is avant-garde film artist Kenneth Anger. He claimed that his films were inspired by Crowley’s philosophy and called them “visual incantations” and “moving spells.” Anger considered Crowley a unique genius. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin both scored soundtracks for Anger’s films about Crowley. See “Led Zeppelin” for more about Page’s enthusiasm for Crowley.

Crowley’s photo appeared on the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album cover. The Beatles testified that the characters who appeared on the album were their “heroes.” John Lennon explained to Playboy magazine that “the whole Beatle idea was to do what you want … do what thou wilst, as long as it doesn’t hurt somebody” (Lennon, cited by David Sheff, The Playboy Interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, p. 61). This was precisely what Crowley taught.

Ozzy Osbourne called Crowley “a phenomenon of his time” (Circus, Aug. 26, 1980, p. 26). Ozzy even had a song called “Mr. Crowley.” “You fooled all the people with magic/ You waited on Satan's call / … Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse…”

On the back cover of the Doors 13 album, Jim Morrison and the other members of the Doors are shown posing with a bust of Aleister Crowley.

David Bowie referred to Crowley in his song “Quicksand” from the album The Man Who Sold the World.

Graham Bond thought he was Crowley’s illegitimate son and recorded albums of satanic rituals with his band Holy Magick.

Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson said: “… we’ve referred to things like the tarot and ideas of people like Aleister Crowley” (Circus, Aug. 31, 1984). Their song “The Number of the Beast” said, “666, the number of the beast/ 666, the one for you and me.” Crowley was called the Beast.

Daryl Hall of the rock duo Hall and Oates admits that he follows Crowley. “I became fascinated with Aleister Crowley, the nineteenth-century British magician who shared those beliefs. … I was fascinated by him because his personality was the late-nineteenth-century equivalent of mine—a person brought up in a conventionally religious family who did everything he could to outrage the people around him as well as himself” (Rock Lives: Profiles and Interviews, p. 584). Hall owns a signed and numbered copy of Crowley’s The Book of Thoth (about an Egyptian god).

Sting, formerly of the Police, has spent many hours studying Crowley’s writings.

Stiv Bators, lead singer for The Dead Boys and Lords of the New Church, had a song titled “Do What Thou Wilt/ This Is the Law,” after the philosophy of Satanist Aleister Crowley. In another song Bators sang: “I heard the Devil curse/ I recognized my name.”

LSD guru Timothy Leary was a Crowley enthusiast. He said: “I’ve been an admirer of Aleister Crowley. I think that I’m carrying on much of the work that he started over a hundred years ago … He was in favor of finding yourself, and ‘Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law’ under love. It was a very powerful statement. I’m sorry he isn’t around now to appreciate the glories he started” (Late Night America, Public Broadcasting Network, cited by Hells Bells, Reel to Real Ministries).

The Marilyn Manson song “Misery Machine” contains the lyrics, “We’re gonna ride to the abbey of Thelema.” The Abbey of Thelema was the temple of Satanist Aleister Crowley.

If ever there was a God-hating degenerate, it was aleister crowley ...

Control Of The Astral Body

Control Of The Astral Body Cover

Book: Control Of The Astral Body by Aleister Crowley

This matter of switching on the Astral Body is a personal trick. It's a straight forward exercise in imaginative Projection to visualize the thing in the first place. The main work of building it up and using it is approached by Crowley in his essays on Yoga, in Liber NU, Liber E, through a number of the rituals and in Some Other Libers. Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice contains a good deal of material on astral bodies, methods of working and the like. To a limited extent, the terms "astral body", "body of light", "diamond body", "subtle body", etc. signify the same thing; but these terms also refer to different theories, practical approaches and gradations of success.

The Invincible Griffin

The Invincible Griffin Image
In reality, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (Alpha et Omega) is but ONE of various outer vehicles of the Internal College led by the Hermetic Masters in Europe. We are NOT the ONLY order with access to these HIGHER orders - and in turn we and they are NOT the ONLY orders which have the TRUE secrets - which are the ONLY available means for full initiation. However, we DO provide access to these HIGHER orders - and in turn we DO provide access to TRUE secrets - which DO provide a complete and full initiation system.

I am not going to cover the lantern of the Mysteries thrust into my hand just to gain approval of other well known Golden Dawn authors and bloggers. If I do, then I don't deserve this lantern. It isn't in my hand because of my personal greatness or glory, but because it is my job as a Kerux of the Hierophants of the Greater Mysteries. I am here to help guide the Outer and Inner Orders into the Third Order that resides here on the physical plane.

But here is something that really puzzles me...

When did THIS happen to the Golden Dawn community?

I am referring to the loss of the compass that guided the founders of the order. The more I see debates on fora and blogs and read and hear from the current generation of Golden Dawn authors, the more I wonder if the idea of the Mysteries and the principle of belonging to an OCCULT order has gotten lost in the fog of post-modernism and the "let's make a quick buck off the occult" era.

To fill you in, it all started one rainy day with a discussion about why secrecy in the Golden Dawn needs to be kicked out to the curb, because: a) It is not necessary in this era of the "the winner is who breaks his oath first and makes it to the publisher fastest," andb) "Hey most of us don't believe in the vows we are taking even while we are taking them" anyway - An oath is "only a formality" like wearing black to a funeral even when we don't care abut the dead guy in the casket. The dead guy here is no other than the traditional principles that formed the spirit of the classical Golden Dawn and the mysteries for thousands of years.Yes, yes, yes...we can argue it is all outdated and absolute in this modern age of IPods, IPads, E-Initiations and cyber funk magick - But let's be honest....deep down we all agree that wisdom is AGELESS...why else would these pop occultists fight like starved pirahnas over the next stash of unpublished Golden Dawn documents dating from before they were born?

The Mysteries are not in the papers. They are in the spirit that penned them - and it is this spirit that penned them has repeated over and over for generations:"Keep the Mysteries from the eyes of the uninitiated..."If we throw away the spirit of the thing then all we have left is its corpse lying in a casket in a busy funeral filled with people that never really cared if she lived or not.

I was personally targeted recently on another blog for criticism and ridicule for holding tight to the guiding spirit of the Golden Dawn and the original beliefs shared by many of the founding fathers and mothers of the order.

Frater Peregrin wrote on in his MOTO blog:"The appeal to hidden Orders, masters etc is all a load of nonsense anyway."Sadly, such cynicism today actually typifies a rather large section of the Golden Dawn community. There are many who today believe that there are NO Masters, NO secrets orders, NO secret knowledge, and EVERYTHING is either published or ABOUT to be published.

How did our Golden Dawn community ever get so jaded?

Was it the faith healing workshops that were sold using the Golden Dawn name?

Or was it the Angel Magic Subliminal CDs?

Or was it the uninitiated, that gave themselves fancy titles - divorced the Golden Dawn from its roots - and promised you to become a "full Golden Dawn initiate" from the comfort of your armchair?

Or was it the self-styled teachers who play on peoples' fears because they feel threatened?

Whether it was one, a combination, or all of the above - one thing is clear...

With all the nonsense that has gone on under the banners of the Golden Dawn - many people in our community have become so jaded they can no longer believe in even the POSSIBILITY that there might yet exist unpublished Mysteries, more advanced practices, or even Hermetic teachers more spiritually advanced than Nick Farrell, Peregrin, or myself!

This sad state of affairs in our community has left the Alpha et Omega for over a decade faced with a serious dilemma - how are we supposed to preserve the sanctity of the Mysteries, yet still show the community we are not just one more "snake oil faith healer" selling "armchair initiations."

We solved this dilemma by over the years describing the higher Hermetic Mysteries in enough detail to show the reasonable progression from not only the magic of the Golden Dawn, but also of the lab alchemy of the Golden Dawn's predecessor, the Golden and Rosy Cross order.

Bear in mind that there are some people out there who keep chanting "No proof!" over and over - merely as a rhetorical tactic to create doubt - because they feel threatened in their personal interests by any higher Hermetic Mysteries beyond what Regardie published.

Even if we would show these people conclusive evidence - heck, even if we were to show them the whole kit and kaboodle - the entire Third Order curriculum, initiation rituals and all, they would still go on chanting "No proof!" while they secretly rushed off to publisher with everything. We must accept from the beginning that no amount of factual evidence will ever change the bad faith of these folks.

However, contrary to the "No proof!" mantra used as a rhetorical tactic by our critics......And whether or not you believe in the existence of secret, Hermetic Master Alchemists...

The Alpha et Omega has nonetheless over the years released a long series of revelations that, in reality, constitute QUITE SUBSTANTIAL and transparent body of SOLID EVIDENCE about the teachings, direction, and practices of the AO's Third Order.

For those that missed this - so might be otherwise be fooled by the "No proof!" parrots - here is a general summary:

1. The true nature of the Opus Magnum is ENERGETIC EVOLUTION. This is the actual purpose of life on Earth. Human beings are but larval forms of a higher, purely energetic form of life that human beings are evolving towards.
2. The Prima Materia of Internal Alchemy is actually the the living matter of the HUMAN BODY.
3. The alchemical transmutation of Lead into Gold is actually an analogy for the transmutation of the Physical Body (Saturn = Lead) into a SOLAR BODY of LIGHT (Sun = Gold).
4. The ROYAL ART of Alchemy is the science of IMMORTALITY - the science of the cultivation of SOUL: a Solar Body of Light that can survive the death of the physical body - and even render us CONSCIOUSLY IMMORTAL.
5. The TRUE PURPOSE of all Hermetic arts, whether GOLDEN DAWN MAGICK, laboratory alchemy, or Hermetic Internal Alchemy is the ACCELERATION of this Energetic Evolution that otherwise would require many incarnations to complete.
6. The THIRD ORDER of the Alpha et Omega teaches HERMETIC INTERNAL ALCHEMY - the highest form of Hermetic Science - in the sense that it is the most powerful operative practice to ACCELERATE Energetic Evolution.
7. Hermetic Internal Alchemy is so powerful that - by using it - you can cultivate a Solar Body of Light in a single lifetime.8. Hermetic Internal Alchemy uses a SECRET FIRE to "cook" and transmute the physical body into pure energy.
9. The true nature of this Secret Fire is the FIRES of the PHYSICAL BODY itself.
10. The most powerful and creative of these fires of the physical body are LOVE and SEXUALITY.
11. Hermetic Internal Alchemy thus cooks the Physical Body (Saturn = Lead) into a Solar Body of Light (Sun = Gold) by harnessing the fires of Love and Sexuality - and using them to accelerate Energetic Evolution.
12. The processes of Hermetic Internal Alchemy hold the secret keys to the true and correct preparation of the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE.
13. The Philosopher's Stone is an incredibly powerful ELIXIR of LIFE that can be used, on the one hand, to increase longevity, and on the other hand, to dramatically accelerate the cultivation of a Solar Body of Light.
14. The opening phase of this Opus Magnum of Hermetic Internal Alchemy involves cultivation and separation of the ASTRAL BODY. (I revealed this for the first time in my last blog article, where I discussed the PLASTICITY of the Astral Body - how for the first alchemical SEPERATIO (in order to separate the Astral Body from the physical body) it is necessary to first liberate the Astral Body from the turbulence caused by its constant bombardment with physical sensations, thoughts, emotions, etc., coming from the physical body. I also revealed that this is the true reason why real initiatic traditions universally require initiatic SILENCE.)
15. Finally - I reveal NOW for the first time - that true ASTRAL PROJECTION is only possible AFTER an Adept has first fully cultivated his or her ASTRAL BODY and achieved the FIRST ALCHEMICAL SEPARATIO. (This can only be achieved by first liberating the Astral Body from the domination of the Physical Body as described above).
16. This has nothing to do with the sort of waking visions involved in "Skying in the Spirit Vision" or that is commonly understood as Astral Projection by the New Age community. Such waking, visionary states can only reach as far as the LOWER ASTRAL, the realm of illusion and self-deceoption.
17. True Astral Projection occurs in a completely DIFFERENT state of consciousness other than any sort of WAKING visionary or trance state. This state is known only to Adepts once they achieve the First Alchemical Separation. Only then, can we pierce through the LOWER ASTRAL with its deceptions and delusions - to achieve the TRUE spiritual vision on the HIGHER ASTRAL plane.
18. This HIGHER visionary experience of the HIGHER ASTRAL PLANE opens only to the eyes of the Adept that has: a. Fully cultivated her or his Astral Body - and b. Liberated the Astral Body from the domination of the physical - and c. Achieved the alchemical SEPARATION of the ASTRAL body from the physical body and mastered its PROJECTION. d. Awakened to full consciousness and awareness on the HIGHER ASTRAL.
19. This "PROJECTING IN THE SPIRIT VISION" is a higher and superior form of visionary experience available to Adepts of the THIRD ORDER of the Golden Dawn. Skrying in the Spirit Vision, as published by Crowley and Regardie, referred by analogy to this higher, THIRD ORDER technique all along.

I will in future articles reveal more about the actual state of consciousness and awareness involved in "Projecting in the Spirit Vision," as well about the true nature of the Higher Astral Plane, and how this form visionary experience substantially differs from the Skrying in the Spirit Vision published by Regardie.

Moreover, I will ultimately make astonishing revelations regarding the TRUE preparation, rectification, and multiplication of the Philosophers' Stone...

Unless, of course, someone from the chorus of "No proof!" parrots would prefer to enlighten us about these Higher Hermetic Mysteries themselves first instead?

Don't count on the "No proof!" parrots doing this, however. Curiously, it is precisely when it comes to THEM providing any real evidence of THEIR understanding of any Hermetic Mysteries higher than those published by Regardie...

Magical Revival

Magical Revival Cover

Book: Magical Revival by Kenneth Grant

Kenneth Grant goes farther than almost anyone in describing real mystic and theosophical truths from a left hand path perspective. The book, which is a left hand path take on the philosophy of Aleister Crowley and the OTO, lays out more in its first two chapters than many books, even somewhat secretive books published by small presses and not known to the general public, do--and this book was printed by a major press and generally available in the early seventies. Goes into many things that are only hinted at in people's thinking about the meaning of various segments of Crowley's thought, from what the relationship of various entitites to the A .'. A.'. and to the Book of the Law is to what the OTO's conception of sex magic was in relation to Tantric Hinduism. More to the point, Grant integrates all of these systems together, so it's not so much OTO concepts being contrasted with Hindu concepts as common ground being found between the two and then a sort of dialogue being produced between them, both describing a common experience and goal. Grant is able to consistantly do this on a number of topics, which makes this book so valuable and interesting.

About Book Four Magick Liber Aba

About Book Four Magick Liber Aba Image
This book has about the most convoluted history of anything Crowley ever wrote. To begin the story, late in 1911 Crowley began an affair with Mary d’Este Sturges (1871 - 1931). She is also known as Mary Desti and an account of their first meeting, only slightly fictionalised, forms the first chapter of Crowley’s novel, Moonchild. They were disporting themselves in Switzerland when she turned suddenly oracular on him and claimed to be in contact with an Adept called Ab-Ul-Diz— you can read the record of their dealings with that entity in Equinox IV-2.

As a result of this communication they went to Italy, rented a villa outside Naples, and sat down to write what became the basis of Book Four.

This was intended to be a complete manual for Crowley’s system of Magick, and in keeping with the title was to consist of four parts:

I: Mysticism
II: Magick (Elementary Theory)
III: Magick in Theory and Practice
IV: Thelema— The Law

Crowley even took the theme of ‘fourness’ to the extent of printing the earlier parts in a square format. To ensure that this work would be accessible to the average person, for Crowley already knew he had problems in that area, he and Sturges adopted an interesting method of composition. Crowley would dictate to Sturges, she would stop him whenever he said something she couldn’t follow, and he would then rephrase or elaborate the passage in question until she was satisfied. This method worked admirably, at least in the earlier sections, and Crowley would use it continually throughout the remainder of his life.

Before their relationship foundered, Crowley and Sturges had completed Parts I and II as well as the core of Part III. When the first two parts were published as separate volumes in 1911 and 1912 Crowley credited Sturges as co-author under her A.A. motto of Soror Virakam.

Crowley continued on with the aid of other assistants, but still Part III took a good deal longer to complete, partly because all this was going on while he was writing and publishing Volume I of The Equinox and partly because he and his associates kept thinking of more stuff to put in. In fact the section that would become the famous Magick in Theory and Practice took another fourteen years to complete! It did not actually see print until 1929, by which time the delay had obscured the fact that it was not a stand-alone work. This still left the final section which was to cover the Law of Thelema, and Crowley finally decided that The Equinox of the Gods (1936), which was also The Equinox III-3, could do double-duty in this respect. Having discussed the genesis of the project, it is now time to give some attention to the actual contents.

I recommend that everyone interested in Magick, even if not the Thelemic variety, should buy the revised second edition of Book Four (Samuel Weiser, 1998.) It is true that the cover price is rather high, but remember that it has the complete contents of three other recent books with corrections and lots of extras to boot. Finally, if you’re at all serious about doing Magick, there is plenty in this book alone to keep you busy for many years.

Snowdrops From A Curate Garden

Snowdrops From A Curate Garden Cover

Book: Snowdrops From A Curate Garden by Aleister Crowley

This is certainly an interesting piece of literature. If you have a weak stomach, or do not have a taste for the twisted and unusual, I would not recommend reading it. The book was actually written with his wife, Rose Edith Kelly, in mind. She had a love of erotica, so Crowley decided to write Snowdrops. Only, this is not your ordinary piece of erotica. It is actually one of the most disgusting things I've ever read. But, that makes it worth reading to me. No one has used language and idea in such a context that Crowley uses in this book. It may turn your stomach, but it is certainly worth reading. If for no other reason, to see what kind of bizarre things this brilliant man could write. (review from readers)

Theatre Magick Aleister Crowley And Rites Of Eleusis

Theatre Magick Aleister Crowley And Rites Of Eleusis Cover

Book: Theatre Magick Aleister Crowley And Rites Of Eleusis by Tupman Tracy Ward

Theatre Magick Aleister Crowley And Rites Of Eleusis, is DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Tracy W. Tupman, M.A. In October and November of 1910 seven one-act plays were produced at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, under the collective title The Rites of Eleusis. The primary
aim of this dissertation is to recreate as accurately as possible the experience of this production, including the colors and designs of the sets and costumes, the blocking and dance, the music, and the style of vocal delivery of the performers. This reconstruction includes a study of the experience of the audience during the performances, since audience involvement was an important goal of the production. This dissertation also explores the philosophical constructs which dictated many of the above-mentioned artistic choices and, through example and analysis, demonstrates how these productions
reflect both a unique attempt to revitalize Western ritual magical practice through theatrical performance, and explores the close relationship which I suggest lies between contemporary magical practice and theatrical practice.

Goddess Ishtar

Goddess Ishtar Image
"ISHTAR" IS THE BABYLONIAN GODDESS OF LOVE AND WAR; SHE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF "THE "SUMARIAN FERTILITY GODDESS," INANNA". SHE WAS THE DIVINE PERSONIFICATION OF THE PLANET "VENUS". HER NAME MEANS "STAR, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. ISHTAR" IS MAINLY ASSOCIATED WITH SEXUAL LOVE AND ROYALTY, AND HER PRIESTESSES ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN SACRED COURTESANS FOUND WITHIN THE TEMPLES OF THE GODDESS. THEY WELCOMED MEN WHO CAME TO WORSHIP THE GODDESS BY ENGAGING IN SEXUAL INTERCOURSE.

ONE OLD BABYLONIAN CUSTOM REQUIRED THAT EACH WOMAN, AT LEAST ONCE DURING HER LIFETIME, WAS TO SIT AT THE SHRINE OF ISHTAR AND OFFER HER BODY TO A STRANGER. ACCORDINGLY, THE MAN WOULD ENTER THE TEMPLE, MAKE HIS CHOICE, AND THEN TOSS MONEY INTO THE LAP OF THE WOMEN HE SELECTED. IN ANCIENT TIMES, MONEY WAS SACRED, SO THE WOMAN WAS UNABLE TO REFUSE. AFTERWARD, HAVING COMPLETED HER DUTY TO THE GODDESS, THE WOMAN WAS THEN FREE TO RETURN TO HER HOME.

SHE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE DAUGHTER OF ANU, THE GOD OF THE AIR, AND IN MOST OF THE MYTHS, SHE IS DEPICTED AS A CRUEL AND HEARTLESS GODDESS WHO DESTROYED HER MATES AND LOVERS. HER GREATEST LOVER WAS THE GOD OF THE HARVEST, TAMMUZ, AND AFTER HE DIED SHE WENT INTO THE UNDERWORLD TO RETRIEVE HIM BUT HER EFFORTS WERE VAIN AND SHE RETURNED TO THE LIVING WORLD ALONE.

HER SACRED ANIMAL WAS THE LION, AND HER SYMBOL WAS THE EIGHT POINTED STAR. HER POWER IS GREATEST DURING THE FULL MOON WHEN SHE ENVELOPS LOVERS IN FERTILE ENERGY. HER ROLE AS PROTECTOR AND WAR GODDESS IS DUE TO HER VOLATILE TEMPER AND HER DESIRE TO RIGHT WRONGS AGAINST WOMEN IN HER CITY.

Thelema Magical Links

Thelema Magical Links Image
Mike from Magick Of Thought was asking me some questions about the different kinds of magical links on one of the older threads. In light of that discussion, this seems like as good a time as any to go over the different kinds of magical links and how they work. Magical links let magicians to cast spells on people, places, or objects without needing to be in direct contact with them.

Magical links follow Sir James Frasier's two primary laws of magick, generally refered to as the Law of Similarity and the Law of Contagion. In "The Golden Bough" Frasier writes:

"If we analyze the principles of thought on which magic is based, they will probably be found to resolve themselves into two: that like produces like, or that the effect resembles its cause; and, second, that things which have once been in contact with each other continue to act on each other at a distance after the physical contact has been severed."

The first principle, the Law of Similarity, states that when any two objects share a particular property that property can allow one to influence the other. The more properties the two objects have in common, the stronger the link. The stongest similarity link is going to be a current image of the target, such as a recent photograph. The second principle, the Law of Contagion, states that once any two objects have come into contact one can be used to influence the other. The closer the contact, the stronger the link. The strongest contagion link is going to be created by something that not only came into contact with the target but which was once part of it, such as hair, blood, fingernail clippings, and so forth.

A third law of magick has been proposed by some practitioners, generally refered to as the Law of Opposites. This law states that when two objects are of opposite natures one can be used to influence the other. As far as I can tell from my own work, though, this law is essentially useless in the context of practical magick. I hypothesize that The reason for this is that the meaning of "opposite" is subjective. Is red the opposite of green? Male the opposite of female? Dog the opposite of cat? Salt the opposite of pepper? When you start trying to break things down like this it gets silly pretty fast. And if you're sloppy about your definitions you wind up with a tautology - similar things influence each other but so do dissimilar things. That is, everything influences everything else. From the standpoint of ritual design this is not helpful.

The Law of Opposites does have a particular application in mystical spirituality. For the development of spiritual realization it is important to understand that when you define X you automatically define Not-X as well. For Good to exist as a distinct thing Evil must exist as well, in that Evil can also be defined as Not-Good. Furthermore, the process of enlightenment involves, among other things, the evolution of a perspective that can accomodate both as complementary rather than exclusive. When talking about properties of the physical world rather than components of consciousness, though, this utility is profoundly limited. It is telling that the last group clinging to the Law of Opposites as applying to the physical world, practitioners of homeopathic medicine, have largely abandoned it in favor of the more similarity-based "water memory" model over the course of the last two decades.

What magical links conduct is probability shifts. When you cast a spell on an object linked to a target, any influence cast on the object will also surround the target. The strength of the transmitted shift will be directly proportional to the strength of the link. This may be modeled as a simple percentage, in which we for example would define a link that transmits 80% of a shift a link of.8, a link that transmits 50% of a shift a.5, and so forth. This is essentially how the L (Link) variable is used in both my operant equation and Peter Carroll's original equation on which mine is based. Direct contact is always a 100% link, or 1.0, whether you are casting a spell on yourself or on someone or something that is physically present in the temple. What this means is that most of the time casting over a link is going to be at least somewhat less effective than casting directly.

A trick that Hoodoo practitioners commonly use to get around this problem is to enchant powders, oils, or other substances and place them strategically so that they will come into direct contact with the target. This results in the creation of a 1.0 link due to direct contact even though the spell itself was performed earlier in a different location. The ceremonial schools raely teach or work with this method but it is easy enough to adapt using a resource like "Liber 777", which lists various herbs, incenses, and materials associated with particular powers. Any material appropriate to a particular power can be used to contain a shift related to that power, which provides the ceremonialist with many different options. As long as the target comes into contact with the enchanted material the spell's probability shift will be transferred optimally.

Mike's first question was in regard to the use of names as magical links. Essentially a name can be used in two ways, as a weak similarity link and as an identifier. You can cast a spell giving only the target's name as a link, but this is not a particularly effective method. You generally want to augment it with a better similarity link like a photo and/or a better contagion link like hair clippings. As an identifier, though, names are much more useful. For example, let's say that you enchant a powder to dump across your target's doorway and they live in an apartment building. You don't necessarily want everyone walking in and out of the building to be affected by the spell, just the individual you have targeted. So in your enchantment your statement of intent would include the target's name. That way the shift will only transfer to the named individual, not to anyone who touches the powder. This also renders the powder safe for you, the magician, to touch without risking exposure to the spell's probability shift.

Mike's next questions were related to whether or not links could be used to target "energy work" based magick, such as Qigong healing. In my experience the answer is yes, but there are some limitations involved. Chinese researchers have proposed that Qigong's healing effects may at least in part be produced by infrasonic waves emitted from the hands of Qigong masters, and such waves cannot be transmitted by a magical link. However, energy work also seems to include a probability-shift based component and that can be transmitted just like any other magical effect. I will say that I have been able to produce distance-healing effects that incorporate Qigong, but direct contact has always worked better. I suspect this is due to the absence of infrasonic waves when performing a distance-healing, not necessarily just because the shift degrades when passing over the link. If that's the case there's going to be an upper limit to this sort of effect and direct contact is always going to produce the best results.

The best way to build a strong link is to exploit the two basic rules to the greatest possible degree. In other words, you should have a current image that if at all possible is augmented by something that has come into contact with or come from the target. In theory, one of the best possible links you could have to a target is a Polaroid instant photo, seeing as the photons from the target will have made direct contact with the picture, representing both a similarity and a contagion link integrated together. This may mean that magicians could be a new market for Polaroid cameras, which are unfortunately being replaced by digital cameras that only create similarity links.

The image accompanying this article shows how these principles are applied in radionics - that is, magick performed by an electronic device. The TARGET LINK is what I'm talking about in this article. The TREND is the term that radionics practitioners use for the probability shift. The TREND LINK doesn't really have a correllate in ceremonial magick, but in radionics it represents the connection to the probability shift that you are creating, which is envisioned as being related to a particular energy frequency. The LIFE FORCE FIELD is what I refer to as the general field of consciousness, which may be represented as consisting of information, energy, or both depending upon one's model of what consciousness is made up of.

UPDATE: It seems I spoke too soon about there being no real equivalent to the radionics "trend link" in ritual magick. As I replied to Frater Barrabbas in the comments, a device like a planetary tablet or some other symbolic representation of a particular magical power or vision would seem to fit the bill. So for a Jupiter ritual, my usual go-to example, the magical qualities of Jupiter would correspond to the Trend and a device bearing the symbols, characters, and names of power associated with that planet would correspond to the Trend Link.

Affirmational Thelematics

Affirmational Thelematics Cover My considerations of the position and the title of Aiwaz ("Aiwass"-78 is actually the transliteration of the name in Liber L vel Legis) began because of the several arguments I was having relative to the questions about Thelema as a religion, and Aiwaz's position or authority in the Thelemic chain of command.

I had simply noted that Crowley, in explaining to a student (in Magick Without Tears) why debating the ethics of the Law, particularly Chapter III's focus on the virtues of being a ruthless monster, was ultimately a vain exercise, had said the following:

"You disagree with Aiwass—so do all of us. The trouble is that He can say: 'But I'm not arguing. I'm telling you.'"

I noted that therefore Aiwaz-Aiwass is telling everyone "do what you're told", which in my view is perfectly consistent with "do what thou wilt", but that is a topic for another article. The point is that Aiwaz isn't here to debate whether the Law of the New Aeon is OK with you, or whether or not it is a good idea for humanity, especially as humanity presently understands itself, which is mainly in anachronistic terms. Liber AL is the Law of the New, modern Aeon. And it compels you to obey that Law.

A lot of people, who seem quite confused about Liber AL's commandments, got incensed at the notion that Aiwaz or anybody else could order them around, or that in fact Crowley's words about Aiwaz "telling you" even meant what they said. They felt that Aiwaz was at most a glorified messenger boy, and that he had no power or function beyond getting the words into Crowley's head and onto paper.

The real power, and the real point of Liber AL, so some of these people were having it, was that it affirmed their right to do, think, and act as they saw fit, which some sanctified by writing a big W on the front of Will, when it was used to label their own whims. Therefore, and unlike What Crowley said, if they didn't like Something Aiwaz had communicated in Liber AL, they could just dismiss it. After all, Crowley may not have heard everything correctly; in fact he admitted to missing a word or two, didn't he; or Aiwass may have been testing the moral fiber of Crowley and all of us, to see how stupidly obedient the slaves might be, even in the face of obeying morally repugnant commands, or suggestions.

The Star Ruby Ritual

The Star Ruby Ritual Cover Aleister Crowley’s Star Ruby Ritual is one Thelemic Rite many non-Thelemites are curious about, sensing perhaps that it is something they can work into their repertoire of magical practice. For we non-Thelemites there are actually two slightly different versions, the first appearing in The Book of Lies and a later modification appearing in Magic in Theory and Practice. Simply put, the Star Ruby is a replacement for the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram that many occultists will be familiar with. Both are banishments meant to sanctify an area for the magician, though many use them by themselves for cleansing areas.

Many Pagans mistakenly believe the Star Ruby is a “Pagan” alternative to the Lesser Banishing because Crowley removed the Hebrew phrases and Judeo-Christian trappings of much of the ritual, but this is wrong. I am not an expert on Thelema (though I have known some Thelemites over the years) but I find that Crowley’s Star Ruby doesn’t “fit” into any ceremonies that are explicitly Pagan. Ceremonial Magicians may have an easier time blending the Star Ruby into their rituals, but since they wouldn’t be bothered by the Judeo-Christian trappings of the Lesser Banishing there wouldn’t be much point. I think that the Star Ruby is best used by people following in Crowley’s magical footsteps, which usually leads to Thelema, although I have known a couple of Magicians who utilized Crowley but never fully embraced his philosophy.

For non-Thelemites I don’t think the Star Ruby is a good replacement for the Lesser Banishing.

But your experience may be different from mine so I present to you the Star Ruby. In magic there is indeed a right way and a wrong way to do things. There are, however, always slight differences in ritual performance from person to person so I am going to embed a couple of different videos so you can get a feel for the what’s important and what is more a matter of style. The Magickal Review has a transcription complete with mp3s so you can hear the correct pronunciations. Here’s a republication of an analysis of the rite that should give you more insight into its construction and whether or not it fits into your practice.

Does the Star Ruby work? Like I said, I’m no expert but it seems to me to be more of a religious exercise; a rite to perform prior to works designed to elevate your inner world rather than affect your outer environment. I have met people who say it’s quite effective, however, so I provide this start for your own research.

Set: A Predecessor of Satan?
By Fenris Wolf

"Set goes into Satan a whole lot easier then Satan goes into
Set. A good anology would be a man (the "Set-oriented"
occultist
) attempting to fit a good sized elephant into a
shoebox. It simply can't be done."
-Fenris Wolf, A thought

You hear about it among some circles-namely, "Satan is a
bastardized version of Set
", or, more kindly, "Set is the
predessesor of Shaitan and Satan.
" But honestly, is this true?
The author says not. For one, notice the areas of any influence
that Set would have on the, perhaps you could say, "designing" of
Satan. For one, I could be wrong, but I don't believe that
Christians where paying all that much attention to the Egyption
religion, much less "design" as it where, Satan after Set. As the
Christian knee-jerk reaction is to ultimately paint ALL foriegn
symbolic "Gods/Goddesses" as "Evil", it's hard to believe that
they sat down and said, "Ok, now which one is the Evil god in the
Egyption religion? It is best we "design" Satan after him."
Doubtful. I have no proof that they didn't, but just through the
use of common sense-doubtful.

Plus, if Set was truley a 'main' influence on Satan, then why is
there so little resemblence? The Devil and his minions have of
corse been depicted in many different ways over the last few
thousand years, but never as ant-eater or ardvark looking
creature*. Satan has been, in most cases, depicted as rather
fearsome, or at least mischevous. No, rather, if any thing was a
"main" influence on Satan, it would have to be the greek gods Pan
and Dionysus, who's resemblence is uncanny to him.

But lets go beyond looks-how about characteristics? Satan has
always been a figure of intelligence, ultra-pridful,
ultra-lustful, and extreme rebellion-while in the Egyption sense
of things, Set really only existed as a god of destruction, such
as draught for instance. There where other deities, such as
Thoth, Amon etc that represented intelligence and Darkness/The
Hidden respectfully. So therefore, one could possibly gain more
correlation between Amon and Thoth with Satan, then one ever
could with Set.

Bogus occultist Micheal Aquino (from hearon out known as "Mikey
Abeano"
) claimed something along the lines that Set embodied all
of the Aespects that the Christians used to "create" or "design"
Satan, but this is inherently false. He claimed that various
characteristics, such as "honor, honestly, intelligence, etc"
where of Set. As far as honor goes, in a well known tale about
Set, it was said that he, in his hurry to be born, tore himself
out of his mothers womb. With all due respect to the symbol of
Set aside-thats hardly very 'honorable'. Secondally, we have
honestly-The Devil has been portrayed in many ways, with normally
positive qualities, but being an honest joe wasn't ussually
always in the cards to be honest. Lastly, as said before,
attributes like intelligence, power, etc, while they might have
been placed by the Egyptions onto Set simply because he was a god
(as all mythologies portray they're deities as intelligent,
powerfully suppierior to mortals anyway
) they wheren't his "Main
line
" if you catch me. Rather, as said before (sorry if I'm
repeating himself
) but Set was more destruction oriented and
such, and any portayles of Abeano and others as the epitome of
intelligence and power are simply-as Rev.Hr.Vad once told
me-placing on him attributes that he did NOT have before.

On another way to refute that Set is the 'predessor of Satan'
what about the other, hundreds of gods/goddesses that easily fit,
or are at least related to the Satanic type? Could not Loki and
his progency, when combined wholesale (more on this in another
essay
) be concidered Satan? Plus, there was no way that the Norse
mythology could have influenced Satan-yet it is still EXTREMELY
similar to Satan-so in otherwords, there are these "Satans" in
every religion, new and old!(even in new age, although they're
harder to see more on this later too)

As the Italian Fascist Dictator once said (I'm quoting from
memory, forgive me if I'm somewhat off
) "We are not like the
English...we call our bread bread, and our wine wine, we tell
things for how they are
". In otherwords, unlike Kenneth Grant and
Aliester Crowley, who both where/are intelligent men, people like
Dr.LaVey didn't beat around the bush-they where direct. He called
his Satan Satan, he did'nt make up other names for him.

(Also, I'd like to say that I don't have anything against Set as
a devil, as he certainly was, but I do have something against
this symbol being portrayed as some sort of major Satanic deity
or whatever.....lets face it people, Set was more of a predessor
to Gonzo then he was to anything else!"
